BMX XXX review

You may already know from previews and the advertisement campaign that this game happens to feature nudity, naked women, and some BMXing. How much of the last depends on how you view the quality of the game, as I must immediately warn you that although there is a lot of game material here, it is of poor quality and that even the tonne of pornography shouldn't tempt gamers of any age.

The 'game' that lies underneath the nudity is but a version of Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, the previous BMX game from Acclaim, and which this was originally designed to be the sequel to, until the sensible Mr Mirra pulled his name from the title. To get to any of the much-claimed pornography videos you have to get past some pretty shoddy gameplay, which should make anyone who bought this wonder if they really were buying it for the game, like they claimed to be doing so to the woman at the checkout. The game is littered with rubbish, such as unresponsive controls, poor collision detection, and an all-round feeling that no thought was put into the game element. It is clearly not as good as Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2.

On the graphical front, BMX XXX is no better. The in-game engine is rough around the edges, and does stand against the likes of other PlayStation 2 titles in the extreme sport genre, such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. The videos themselves are not exactly the much-acclaimed hardcore pornography that Acclaim was so quick to try and promote.

Again, to mention THPS4; although both games are of different extreme sports, BMX XXX's level objectives, trick system, create-a-biker mode, and the two-player mode, simply cannot compare to the quality of the former title. This does not provide any help to the lifespan of an already pitiful and unexciting game.

If there is one good point to mention in the game (and no, it's not the pornography), it's the levels. Although slightly tight, and tied up with the sexual theme of the game, they do seem to be fairly well designed, and make the game at least slightly playable.

Ratings

Graphics Jaggies and bland environments are not compensated by the porn videos 4/10
Gameplay Appaling; its as if Z-Axis 'forgot' about this core element 4/10
Value At the time of writing, we did not have a value for money ranking. 0/10
Lifespan If you can get past dodgy controls, tedious objects, and a ridiculously high difficulty, you can maybe enjoy a couple hours of gameplay 4/10
Audio Nothing that bad, but nothing that special 6/10
Overall It is as if Z-Axis took a BMX game, added sexual content, and removed the game element, leaving us with a difficult to access porn DVD 4/10
