Brink preview

Brink is a first person shooter from Splash Damage set in a declining utopian city, the initial planned design degenerating into the current violent conflict between the security forces and the resistance movement.

As a player, you can create your character as a member of either of these factions and play through your story. Between missions you can customise you character, equipping them with newly unlocked armour or clothing or adding cosmetic touches.

When in game, Brink features a very flexible movement system called SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain). When holding down the sprint/SMART button, your character will do their best to get to where you're looking which may involve jumping, vaulting, mantling or sliding. For example, when approaching a security gate the player might opt to climb over it by looking upwards or slide under it by looking downward while holding the SMART button. The SMART system allows the player to move quickly and flexibly across a variety of terrain but also gives the player more tactical options during battle.

Brink allows the player to choose from a range of classes for each mission. This class will decide the range of objectives which are available to the character while on the mission. Once the mission begins the player can bring up a list of objectives, tailored to player's current class, which can be completed to aid their team in achieving their main objective. After selecting a mission an arrow will appear to guide the player around the level to complete the current objective.

At certain points in any mission, a particular class may be required; a soldier to plant a bomb or an engineer to activate a piece of equipment. At this point, one member of the squad must switch to this class (by accessing a terminal) and protecting that player will become the highest priority objective for the other players in the squad.

While Brink can be played solo, it features co-op gameplay for up to eight players which can join in and drop out at any time without interrupting the mission.

Brink will be available in Spring 2010 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
