It's a busy week for the PS3, with new firmware and now the launch of the video delivery service. The new video section of the PlayStation Store has arrived in Europe, or at least the UK, Francy, Germany and Spain for now, bringing with it more than 800 films. The movies are from a wide range of companies; 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Starz Media, Universal and Warner Bros.
Movies are available to both rent and buy from £2.49 and £6.99 respectively, with rentals available in HD or SD. Purchases are currently only available in standard definition, although Sony is already planning to introduce HD movie buying in the near future. There's also a range of content from UK studios, such as Optimum Releasing, and hopefully we'll see some UK TV content soon too. Rentals are available to watch for 14 days after downloading, and 48 hours after you started watching. Movies are, of course, stored on your PS3 HDD, although they can also be transferred to a PSP to watch them on the go.
To promote the launch, Sony are giving away a copy of Transformers - to own - to anyone signing up to the PlayStation Network between 19th and 30th November. Existing PSN members can pick up a free copy of The Da Vinci Code if they purchase Angels and Demons.
We'll be taking a closer look at the new service in the coming days.
