In a world of smartphones communicating via Steam has felt somewhat archaic because you always needed to use the Steam client on a Windows PC or Mac, and while the store was eventually opened up to any web browser, the experience isn't really built for a mobile. Now Valve are answering these issues with a new app for Android and iOS available today from the Android Market and iOS App Store respectively. It will allow you to It will allow you to keep track of what friends are up to, chat with them, or even buy things from the Steam store which will then be available to downloaded when you next log on via your PC or Mac. Community features include all the usual groups and user profiles, screenshots and user-generated content.

In typical modern day fashion it's being released as a beta, and a closed one too. While anyone can head to the the Market or App Store, you won't be able to log in without your account being enabled for the beta. And to register for the beta you need to download the app and try to log in. You can probably see what they're doing there. Valve didn't indicate any plans to sell games for smartphones and tablets via the mobile Steam client, but at least in the case of Android, we suspect that remains a possibility for the future.

You can read more about it on the Steam for Mobile Devices site.
