UK Charts: Smurfs rise, Pikmin fall, but Minecraft moves nowhere

It looks like it's another week without a lot of activity in the UK all-format chart, but there's still a few things to note. Last week's new number 1, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, remains at the top, but last week's second place debutant, Nintendo's own Wii U exclusive Pikmin 3 falls all the way to 15th, underlining the company's issues in selling machines. Sony's PS3-exclusive The Last of Us rises back up to second to fill the gap. Ubisoft's The Smurfs 2 makes a big jump this week; after arriving last week in 25th place - having debuted outside the Top 40 - it's now all the way up in fifth, coinciding with the school summer holidays and the release of the film it ties in with.

Now we're in August there's a lack not only of new games being released last week - and therefore no new entries in the chart this week - but there's also no major releases out this Friday either. So expect Minecraft to remain on top unless someone does some sort of heavy discount, which isn't unusual at this time of year. The margins must be tight throughout the Top 40 with most games moving about the place with no consistent up or down pattern. Just take a look at our charts page and look at the "Position last week" column to see what I mean. A complete jumble.

And that's it for another week.
