Valve's long-awaited release of the Steam digital delivery platform on MacOS X launches later today. Mac users will finally be able to join their PC brethren in buying and downloading high-profile new games, enjoying the ability to see what your friends are up to, and launching right into games with them. Naturally the selection of games available will be more limited on the Mac compared to the PC, due to a lack of publisher support for the platform over the years, but Valve's efforts look set to drive interest in MacOS gaming again.

Among the first games on the platform will be Runic's Torchlight, Two Tribes' Toki Tori, and The Games Company's Max and the Magic Marker which will also be available to those who own the PC version (on Steam) thanks to the "Steam Play" feature. This same feature will also allow owners of the PC versions of Valve's own Portal to play it on Mac, with the company's other Source engine titles, including Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 set to arrive in the coming weeks. In fact, Valve are planning weekly updates to the games list on Wednesdays, with an effort to highlight new features on the platform each week. The first week's titles are promoting the Steam Play feature, although there's no details on what is in store for Week 2.

MacOS X users with a powerful enough machine will be able to get hold of the Steam client from the official website later today.

Story updated to reflect lack of other Source engine games on Day 1
