Spore release date revealed

After all the long delays, it's looking like EA's Spore is finally set for release. Well, almost - the release date is scheduled for 5th September here in Europe (two days ahead of the US release) - which is plenty of time for further delays to arise. However, this is the first time EA and Maxis have committed to a proper date, so there is hope.

"The wait is almost over," said Maxis Chief Designer himself, Will Wright. "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year."

Spore - as you may be aware by now - essentially gives players their own personal universe in a box. You get to create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilisations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers. There's full online integration planned, though we're not sure how this extends to the planned DS or mobile versions - but for the PC and Mac this is on the cards.

So, less than 7 months to go. Start the countdown? Or is someone taking bets on a delay?
