Sony have launched the PlayStation Plus premium service for the PlayStation Network this week. The new services brings a bunch of new features for £39.99/year or £11.99 for 90 days, but all existing features remain free, including the all-important multiplayer components of PSN-enabled games. On offer each month is a game, two minis and a PSone title - all yours to use for as long as you remain subscribed. You need to download the games within the month as each time the calendar rolls over a new selection is available. Also included in the subscription are discounts for PSN titles, the ability to play an hour of a selected full title (instead of trying a limited demo), and some extra free items, such as themes. Early access to betas is also promised. Perhaps controversially, PlayStation Plus also has the ability to automatically patch your system and games overnight - a service that should really have been available to all.
The first month features content such as WipEout HD, Destruction Derby, Shatter, and the KillZone 2 "Steel & Titanium"downloadable content (DLC). Not a bad start, although month 2's main highlight is PSone game Medieval so it remains to be seen if episode 3 picks up the pace. It remains to be seen if PlayStation Plus is really valuable for both you and Sony alike.
