This week SEGA lifted the lid on the mysterious Project Needlemouse by announcing Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. Clearly it's an episodic release, but the most important part of the announcement was that this is actually a 2D side-scrolling platformer, continuing right off from Sonic & Knuckles. It'll use rendered 3D models but the gameplay will be in 2D, with just Sonic playable. The story is also set to continue from where Sonic & Knuckles left off.

The game is set for a released as a downloadable title, available on the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii respectively. The first two will be in HD, naturally, while the latter two will get motion control support. We'll bring you more on Sonic 4 in the near future, but for now you can check out the official trailer.
