After providing a completely free service for quite some time, a payment model has been revealed for Quake Live as it exits its beta phase. id Software are introducing 'Premium' and 'Pro' subscriptions to the online first person shooter (aka Quake 3 plus extra stuff in a browser), while keeping all the existing features free-to-play for all.
The Premium Subscription can be purchased for £1.59/month (although charged annually) and includes:
- Access to 20 Premium-only maps at launch with more to come
- A new 'Freeze Tag' mode
- Some "exclusive premium level awards"
- Ability to create your own clan and join up to five separate clans
- Custom Quake Live profile wallpaper
- Match statistics stored for six months
Meanwhile, if you're really hardcare, you can get a Pro Subscription for £3.18/month (again charged annually) which includes all of the above features plus:
- The ability to start your own game server, specify a server location, determine the game mode and invite who you want to join you
- Invite three friends with standard memberships (that's the free ones) to play with you in any Premium level map
- Exclusive "pro awards"
- Create your own clan and join up to ten separate clans
- Match statistics stored for 12 months
It'll be interesting to see how successful this proves for id Software and their paymasters at ZeniMax, but the reasonable pricing, and keeping on a healthy dose of non-paying customers who can be converted into the future gives hope to Quake Live becoming a commerical success. Who knew Quake 3 could still generate money 11 years on?
