OnLive coming to UK via BT

We've heard a lot about OnLive over the past year. The Silicon Valley-based company is planning to bring the cloud computer concept to the video games world by allowing users to purchase and play games through online streaming. New video compression technology developed by the company allows them to essentially run the games at their end, and allow you to play them live from your living room without the need for complex and more expensive technology. Essentially all you really need is a decent internet connection.

And this is where BT comes in. The UK telecoms giant owns a good proportion of the telephone network in this country, and with their access to exchanges and cabinets on the streets, they seem well placed to provide the OnLive service to British residents. The deal gives BT exclusive rights to bundle the OnLive Game Service with broadband in the UK, and also sees BT take a 2.6 per cent shareholding in OnLive Inc.

OnLive is due to officially launch in the US this summer following what OnLive claim was a successful beta trial. BT say they will provide further details about their launch plans later this year. The OnLive deal is expected to tie into the company's existing BT Vision on-demand digital TV service.
