To coincide with this week's launch of PlayStation Plus, Sony has released new firmware for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. The PSP firmware version doesn't add much - it simply enables support for PSP-compatible PlayStation Plus game (such as minis and PSone classics), as well as introducing the ability to sort games on the Memory Stick by Format. On the PS3 there's more than just PlayStation Plus support with three interesting new features. Firstly is a brand new video editor which can stitch together clips, such as those recorded in game and placed on the XMB, and then upload these to either Facebook or YouTube directly from the console. Further Facebook integration is also available in the Photo Gallery application, where you can now browse photos from both Facebook and Picasa Web Albums, and upload to both services too. You can also avoid the social networking systems and just share them directly with your PSN friends.
The third highlight is the new ability to rate content on the PlayStation Store, finally giving a bit of user-control of what is actually worth downloading. A 5 star system is now in place. Joining this option is a change to the default automatic switch off time, the ability to see the trophy level of a Friend by selecting the Friend's avatar, and amusingly, "the internal clock functionality that accounts for leap years has been improved". Presumably to prevent the issue that prevented older PS3s from working on 1st March earlier this year...
