One of our favourite indie developers, Introversion Software, have announced they're moving beyond just PC/Mac development with the announcement of their first Xbox Live Arcade title; Darwinia+. The appearance of Darwinia on the platform hasn't been a secret, with Introversion's logo appearing on an XBLA side at Microsoft's E3 2006 press conference. In fact, the company has released DEFCON since then, but Darwinia's appearance on the platform seemed increasingly likely since it was ported to DirectX and released as a Vista-enhanced game last year.
Introversion have since been at work on a multiplayer version of Darwinia, known as Multiwinia, and it's this they're combining with the original title to form the new Xbox 360 game Darwinia+. Both the PC release of Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest, and Darwinia+ on XBLA will take place in the early Autumn this year.
Chris Delay, Introversion's Creative Director stated "When we first started Introversion back in 2001, the idea of developing our games for a console seemed an impossible challenge, and whilst we have built a fantastic community around our PC games, and will continue to support that, it has always been our dream to take the next step and produce a console title."
Darwinia, if you're not aware, is a curiously unique game, combining bits from various genres and achieving a lot of praise from us upon its release back in 2005. It has since had many patches which have improved gameplay for newcomers, with Xbox 360 controller support part of a bigger overhaul that was released for free last summer. It's likely this version which will be the basis for the 360 edition.
We hope to bring you more on both releases in the coming months.
