At the start of the week Danish developer IO Interactive hinted that they had a big announcement to make on Thursday, and now they and publisher Square Enix have announced two important bits about their upcoming action game Hitman: Absolution.

Hitman: Sniper Challenge, spotted in a trademark registered by the Japanese publisher earlier this year, is a standalone sniper-based game, available for free to those who pre-order Hitman: Absolution. It is not a part of the main game, but instead it's a separate scenario involving Agent 47 on a balcony overlooking a roof-top party. Armed with a sniper rifle, you are tasked with taking out a CEO along with his entire staff of bodyguards. You can even score multipliers, unlock upgrades, discover secrets, and generally experiment with the scenario, something the series is known for.

The Kazo TRG sniper rifle from the Sniper Challenge can be carried over to Absolution, along with other upgrades. It will also feature online leaderboards to compare sniping abilities around the world, with challenges to be set by IOI. This is also the first outing for the company's new Glacier 2 engine.

In addition to revealing Sniper Challenge, Square Enix also announced a worldwide release date of November 20th for Hitman: Absolution, arriving on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC simultaneously. Sniper Challenge will be available immediately to those who pre-order the PS3 or 360 versions after May 15th (those who order before will get it then), with the game appearing via the PSN or Xbox Live. The PC version will be available to those who pre-order via Steam from August 1st.
