New iterations of two of Nintendo's long-running franchises Kirby and Donkey Kong were unveiled at Nintendo's E3 press conference. Donkey Kong was the game that launched Mario, but Donkey Kong Country is the series that won gamers over to the ape. The games were developed by Rare, who have since become part of Microsoft Games Studios, so it falls upon Metroid Prime creators Retro Studios to deliver Donkey Kong Country Returns. The side-scrolling platformer looked exciting in the live demo on stage, and has impressed on the show floor too. However, it doesn't look quite as impressive as Kirby: Epic Yarn which is also a side-scrolling platformer, except this time the purple creature has become made of yarn, and as a result can essentially whip enemies. Instead of the copy ability, Kirby will morph shape under certain actions. It's an exciting title, and we look forward to seeing more of that ahead of its release later this year.
