Codemasters buy up Sega Racing Studios

SEGA recently announced that they were closing the Sega Racing Studio, but it looks like Codemasters have come to the rescue after an agreement with the Japanese publisher to purchase the studio. Based in Solihull, central England, the developer worked on the excellent Sega Rally, but has faced closure in recent weeks. Codemasters, who are involved in various racing titles, such as the upcoming Race Driver: GRID, seem a natural fit for the team, many of whom previously worked at the British publisher on the Colin McRae Rally series.

"In seizing this opportunity, we have created additional resources to escalate our plans in the racing segment," said Rod Cousens, chief executive, Codemasters. "We hope to welcome more than 40 people to the company and we have enjoyed the full co-operation of our friends at Sega in making this happen. It is good business for Codemasters, an exciting prospect and there will be more to come as we are not content to stand still."

We don't know what the former SRS team will be working on, though we expect the team to be integrated into the existing Codemasters Studios staff rather than working on titles of their own.
