Ubisoft's previously announced "Tom Clancy air combat game" has now been named, and details properly served up. Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., which apparently stands for high-altitude warfare (not sure about the X), is set for a release this Autumn on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It's being developed by the publisher's Bucharest studio, and features a story that begins in 2012 as the era of the nation-state "draws quickly to a close". Like Metal Gear Solid 4, there's an emphasis on private military companies (PMCs) working on behalf of governments and becoming too powerful in their own right. Of course, the game is also set in the air, and is the first air combat game in the "Tom Clancy's video game universe" - it's been mostly third or first-person tactical shooters until now, except for the upcoming RTS EndWar.
As well as the "Enhanced Reality System" - which seems to be the equivalent of G.R.A.W.'s CrossCom - there's an assistance mode which should allow you to settle into the action quicker, but most interesting is the multiplayer. In a new move for the genre, you'll be able to play through the solo campaign in four-player "jump in" co-op mode, where people can come and go as they please. Of course, if you'd rather just shoot them, there's the usual PVP mode for up to 16 players, which sounds impressive in itself.
Despite the silly name H.A.W.X. does have a lot going for it, and we look forward to seeing more of it later this year.
