These days most video games announcements come from televised award ceremonies, magazine exclusives or trade shows. Or leaks. Well, Capcom has forgone all of those and just gone ahead and put out an announcement with an accompanying trailer for Resident Evil 6.

The fact that Capcom is working on the next entry in the survival horror series will come as a shock to no one, but it was still a bit of a surprise when they revealed that it will arrive on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 20th... this year. That means they have been working on the game for a while and managed to keep it a secret, a rarity only matched by Naughty Dog's recently revealed The Last of Us, but even that's not due until next year.

Resident Evil 6 is set to be a blend of action and survival horror, as demonstrated in the trailer below. It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident, and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bio-terrorist activity. Leon S. Kennedy, survivor of Raccoon City and protagonist of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 is supposed to be appeared at the President's side for the announcement, but when the venue suffers from its own bio-terrorist attack he is forced to take on a mutated President. Original Resident Evil hero Chris Redfield is also involved, taking on a bio-terrorist attack in China. It's the first time these two have come together in the series, despite their long-running presence.

The trailer suggests you'll get to play as both with their own styles of play. A third style and character is also hinted at, and Capcom are promising a whole host of new characters, each with their own unique perspective on the global story.

"Resident Evil 6 represents a giant stride forward in the evolution of the series," commented Katsuhiko Ichii, Head of R&D and Global Marketing. "The development team, led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, is working tirelessly to deliver the most impressive Resident Evil title ever both in terms of scope and production values. We are all genuinely excited by the title and cannot wait to share it with the world."

Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Resident Evil 6's Executive Producer added: "From the outset the team's intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers."

The first trailer is below, and while it looks impressive, it remains to be seen how fans will react to the increasing focus on fast-paced action over the more traditional survival horror that the original game focused on. We'll have more in the run up to the game's console release in November, and its Windows PC release some time after.
