My wife bought me Halo2, NFSU2 and THUG2 for Xmas and I was chuffed to bits as I had been waiting for these games for a long time now.

I had noticed that my Xbox,
which all of u know is U.S but modded for UK games Genuine games only!!! had been playing up over the last few months (slow loading times, dashboard freezes from time to time, games would crash a lot etc...etc)

My Xbox is nearly 3 years old now and it was 6 months old when I bought it, and so it is general wear & tear and me using CD-RW's for music for WWE Raw 2.

Well I was playing NFSU2 and got really far and it crashed while it was saving and now it wont load at all, and when I started a new save it crashed 4 times in 1 hour and corrupted my save for a 2nd time.

I spoke to a local console repair shop and they have told me my drive (Samsung) needs replacing and the only drives that you can get are Thompson.

I thought of buying a new Xbox but then my U.S games would be useless to me, I dont want to do that seeing as Street Racing Syndicate to which I bought mine from Canada in October dont come over here for a few months yet.

Now I have to wait till the end of January when I can afford the £49 for the cost of the drive and the installation.

Now Does That Suck Or What!!!

Yea! it suck's! as you may remember,i think im the only guy that had 6 PS2's die on me.All were brand new,all stopped loading CD's or CD games after 6 months. They were only good for DVD's & DVD games.
So to this day i won't buy another PS2,i just hope they get things right on the PS3 so as maybe i'll buy one when they finally launch.
Im real sorry to read about your xbox grief,i know exactly how you feel mate! To say more than a little P***** **f!! would be the greatest understatment ever! [Sad]

Not for getting all those lovely new xmas presents you can't even play! Man! that's really depressing! [Shocked]

Cheers for that Juan,

But now I have been told on gamefaqs.com My drive is actually now a Thompson and that the Thompson drives are crap, [Mad] and that I should get either:-

Samsung, Panasonic or the new Hitatchi drive.

But it might be cheaper for me to buy a new Crystal Xbox, but before I buy one to ask the people at whatever games shop I go to, and ask if they could check the manual inside the box for the technical specs to see what drive is actually installed.

But then my U.S games I can sell at Computer Exchange, only one problem with that!

They aint gonna give me much for each game, so I have to cut my losses and have to accept what has happened. [Crying]

Cheers,

You could try buying a replacement drive on eBay - but you do pay more for non-Thompson drives.

I was looking for new drives when I had an error with mine (Thomson). It was on a pretty much brand new US Dead or Alive 2 (from DOA Ultimate) so there was no problem with the disk (yes, I did get the long loading times). I found a UK site that did a Samsung drive for £45 which I would have fitted myself. A run through with a DVD cleaner solved the problem though. Might be worth a shot.

If you decide to sell your American games there are a couple of UK Forums that have trading so you would probably get a better price than in a UK shop. PM me if you want details.

Thankx for that, I know about that site, but I aint technically minded to fit it.

My local repair shop is trying to get some Samsung drives, without a promise though.

I have tried a lens cleaner, but now that my Xbox is 3 years old the drive wont read my lens cleaner, as it used to before.

Most of my U.S games are old titles, and they wont fetch much anyways, apart from Strret Racing Syndicate which I hope might fetch between £15 - £20 seeing as it's only 2 months old.

Cheers,

I presume your local repair shop deals with consoles because it has to be specific type of Samsung drive for an Xbox.

Well, a normal DVD-ROM drive would look rather odd in the Xbox too! [Wink]

Yes they do, the specialise in consoles.....their called Jesters Console Repairs,

Repairing, upgrading etc...etc....

They originally said that they only stock and install Thompson drives, but he had a contact in the business and he might be able to land his hands on some Samsung drives but with no promises.

I did phone a repair shop on the outskirts of Birmingham and he said that he dont stock them but he would fit a Samsung drive for nothing if I could get one from the net, but it's getting to him.

I only know the city (shopping centre) and I dont have transport and none of my freinds wont take me in their car, and my wife wont let me walk any street alone carrying an XBox.

Jesters is now my only hope, and they cant get the Samsung drive it looks like i'll be buying a new Xbox in February (when I can afford one).

OH WELL,

Jesters said they havent had any luck getting any Thompson drives, let alone Samsung.

So now I have to find £100 to buy a new one, I dont know when that will be? I am skint at the moment.

Maybe February or March, but seeing the ads for the games I had for Xmas Halo 2, NFSU 2, THUG 2 all the time, and watching Pimp My Ride (Sponsered by NFSU 2) is really getting on my nerves as I havent played them since 27th December.

Oh Well,

Maybe worth looking on eBay for either a new drive or even a new console...

I've now got my new XBox, and it has a Samsung drive [Big Grin]

It cost me £129.99 with Burnout 3 from The Software Shop in Wolverhampton, and besides it was the only shop in Wolverhampton that had stock.

All the other shops had all sold out and wont have anymore deliveries until early february.

Now I'm having a NFSU2 weekend seeing as I aint played it since December 27th.

Cheers for all you help & support.

Sorry to bring this back up but the phillips drive on my crystal x-box started acting up 2 days ago (it stopped reading discs but after a few attempts it started working but was slow loading and the drive kept on stopping and starting) the only good thing is that my system is only 9 months old but customer support has made a mess of it at the moment as the box they ment to have sent out didn't come yesterday (only a person from UPS to collect the console) and the computers at customer support were down for the whole of yesterday.

Customer support were pretty good when my DVD drive went. I received the box on the Monday and had a repaired (they replaced the DVD drive, hard disk and power supply) Xbox back on the Friday. You ought to consider trying to back up the saves in case they replace everything as a matter of course. Incidentally I discovered my maching now has a Hitachi drive in it.
