New AAG theme in development

Posted by Dave Wickham

As the title says, I’m working on a new AAG theme. It’s not revolutionary by any stretch of the imagination – the main elements remain the same – but it should be less dull than the current theme. You can switch to it by going to the Change Theme page and selecting “Newtest” (i.e. “new test”, not “that which is most newt”).

First off, before you select it and hit that reply form to say “This new theme sucks!”, this is by no means a finished style. At the time of writing, links were all pink. I’m quite sure that won’t be in the final version. The intention of posting it to the blog is to get some feedback/inspiration; suggestions of colours that do work together, ideas that I hadn’t thought of, things that definitely don’t work, and so on. If someone’s using an exotic browser that Does Strange Things with the theme, I’d like to hear about it before we make it the default.

On a related note, if there are any CSS masters out there reading this, feel free to develop your own themes if you feel like it; we’ll be happy to modify the HTML to accomodate anything you need to get it to work, and we’ll be happy to add finished themes to the CSS selection box, with obvious exceptions such as obscene themes.

Yeah that’s all very nice but the most important thing is when are the discussion boards returning???

The policy of removing them and then not allowing guests to post on the shoutbox is costing this site thousands of new users. This site was only good for posting on the forums and the shoutbox.

We don’t want to only enable registered shouting and keep the forum down for this long. The shoutbox being registered-only is a recent thing, due to it being hit with spam constantly – it would just be pointless to even attempt to get any kind of meaningful use out of it like that. I believe the registration form is still in working condition, but it obviously still holds some (actually, make that a lot) of the outdated code.

The forums themselves aren’t yet up purely for technical reasons; namely that it’s difficult to convert them to the new system. This theme development actually helps this along, as it allows me to develop my CSS skills, which can then be fed back into the forum code. If anyone’s very good at CSS (that’s Cascading Style Sheets, not Counter Strike: Source) and reading this, and wishes to help, please contact me.

As for that being all that we’re good for, I’d dispute that; we have still maintained visitor numbers whilst the forums have been down, though I’ll be the first to admit that we do need more staff for more regular content updates.
